Residency & Visas in Portugal
Relocating to Portugal offers access to a refined lifestyle, alongside the benefits of residency, including healthcare, social security, and long-term stability. Depending on nationality and personal circumstances, residency can be obtained automatically or through a tailored visa pathway.
EU Citizens
Citizens of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland benefit from the right to live and reside in Portugal without the need for a visa. This entitlement also extends to close family members.
While not mandatory, it is recommended to register for a residency certificate within the first three months of arrival to formalise your status.
Non-EU family members accompanying an EU citizen may apply for a residence permit to remain in Portugal.
Non-EU Visitors
Non-EU nationals may stay in Portugal for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen visa rules. This flexibility makes Portugal an ideal destination for holiday homeowners and part-time residents seeking a lifestyle base in Europe.
D7 Visa - Retirement & Passive Income
The D7 Visa is a popular pathway for non-EU citizens wishing to reside in Portugal without local employment.
Eligibility is based on demonstrating stable passive income, such as pensions, rental income, investments, or remote earnings, at or above the Portuguese minimum wage level, with additional income required for dependants.
Applicants must also hold valid private health insurance. The process begins with an application at a Portuguese Consulate, followed by securing a residency permit upon arrival. The visa is renewable and can lead to permanent residency after five years of continuous residence.
D2 & D3 Visas – Economic Activity
For those looking to work or establish a business in Portugal, specialist visa options are available:
The D2 Visa is designed for entrepreneurs and business owners establishing or relocating a company in Portugal.
The D3 Visa is intended for highly qualified professionals with specialist skills or advanced academic qualifications.
Both routes provide structured pathways to live and work legally in Portugal while contributing to the local economy.
Digital Nomad Visa & Investment Routes
The Digital Nomad Visa, introduced in 2022, is designed for non-EU nationals earning income remotely from outside Portugal. It allows professionals to reside in the country while continuing to work for international employers or clients.
The Golden Visa programme, previously a popular investment route for residency through qualifying capital investment or property acquisition, was closed to new real estate applications in 2023 and is no longer available.
